A Veterans Day Guest Post with Dr. Stanley Hall

The "Hub" here. Robin's "Hub," that is. As she mentioned in this post, I'm not familiar with the mockinjay, but have a huge passion for birdwatching as well as rock climbing and helping military families. I moved to the Mojave desert as a marriage and family therapist counseling US Marines & Sailors. I added birds to my life-list and grew in my appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of military families.

I moved to 29 Palms because I needed a job and wanted to climb in Joshua Tree. However, leaving 29 Palms is something I've only done physically. Emotionally, I am still tied to the military families who serve in that hot desert. The crucible-like conditions caused many families to split-up, and some went home rather than endure the extreme conditions of intense training and isolation. However, many families survive and come out stronger. Some stay and call it "home" even after their term of service is over.
On this Veteran's Day I want to honor all those who have sacrificed for our country and
praise them for their service. In honor of today I am giving away one paperback and two free electronic copies of my book, DEPLOYED: THE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR FAMILIES AT WAR.

All you have to do is comment below to be entered.

If you would like to purchase DEPLOYED for yourself or a military family please click here (and scroll to the bottom of the page).

  3. My brother served at 29 Palms. Man, that place is hell. But you're right. Some of the soldiers and their families come back stronger. Great post, and congrats on your book!

  4. Awesome. My grandpa is a vet, a pilot, and he tells us stories of sitting in the Philippians, staring out over the landscape and wondering if he would ever be lucky enough to have a family. I appreciate the sacrifice of all our vets.

  5. My grandpa was very quiet about his time in the navy during WWII, but since he's passed away this past year, I've learned his ship was bombed and he spent a night in the ocean waiting for help to arrive. He told my cousin after she watched PEARL HARBOR and asked him if he knew about it, "Know about it? I LIVED it."

I'm so excited about your book, Stan, and agree with everyone else: Perfect post for Veteran's Day!

  6. Anxious to read your book. My dad was in the Pacific Campaign for much of WWII and then on to the Korean War. He felt blessed to have survived, and got out after 20 years just before deployments for Vietnam. Said he didn't want to tempt fate. I remember when my son was around six he asked my dad to tell him some good stories about war. "There are no good stories about war," he said. It stuck with all of us, as he was never one to glorify the sacrifices he made. Thanks for the post on Veteran's Day!

  7. Stan, congratulations on your book. I'm sure you found great satisfaction in serving military men, women and families. My dad is a Vietnam vet. Three of his sons, including me, served; the youngest did a tour in Iraq. Now, some of his grandsons have already accepted ROTC or National Guard appointments in connection with college.
