What's Up Wednesday: Cake Edition

“What’s Up Wednesday” is a weekly meme started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk. From Jaime: It’s similar in some respects to the Currently… post, but it’s been whittled down to only four headings to make it quicker and more manageable on a weekly basis. You’re invited to join us if you’re looking for something to blog about, a way to let your blog friends know what’s been going on with you. If you’re participating, make sure to link your What’s Up Wednesday posts to the list on Jaime’s blog each week. That way, others can visit your post and check out what you’ve been up to.

What I'm Reading:
Non-fiction:
This is my second time checking out Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop CS6. I'm awful at this program, but determined to get better. I don't know why it's so hard for me. It takes me hours to do something super easy and I have to admit I've cried in frustration over this program more than once. If you have any tips on how to better understand/use photoshop, I'm all ears.
TRUMPET OF THE SWAN  is another book from my childhood that I remember loving, but not much beyond that. We're listening to it now in the car and the kiddos are really getting into it.

Fiction:

SKY JUMPERS by Peggy Eggleman. I met her at LDStorymakers and she was  nice and smart and funny, just like her debut. It took me to the second chapter to be hooked, but now I'm flying through the story of Hope, her little inventing town, the Bomb's Breath, and bandits. I'm giving it to my kiddos as soon as I'm finished so they can revel in the  intricate world building, characters I feel for, and spot on humor.

What I'm Writing:
I'm working on a second draft of my MG novel. I've done the read through, I know (some of) what I have to do, but it's not as easy as I want it to be. I'm finding too many excuses to NOT write this week. Pledging now to do better. I'm supposed to have this revision done this month and beta ready, so I need to get cracking.

What Else I've Been Up To:
Three kid birthdays in one week. Who would have thought you could be tired of cake? I'm living proof it's possible.

10 yo. No, he's not shy. He simply
doesn't like the camera flash.
My silly 6yo Cowgirl

We had fancy cupcakes for lunch, but she
wanted to decorate her own cake:)
My beautiful 8yo before her baptism. She's wearing the same dress I was baptized in when I was eight. *so special*

What Inspires Me Right Now:

  • Having to take the flashlight away from my 10yo at 11 pm so he'll finally stop reading and go to sleep.
  • All the new cover beauty I'm seeing all of over the internet. Three of my favorites here, here, and here.
  • Beta readers with spot on feedback
  • Spoilery kissy scenes from my CPs
  • General Conference

What are you guys up to on this lovely Wednesday?

  3. That's so sweet that your daughter was baptised in the same dress you were!
I thought my kids birthdays were bad (Dec, Jan, Feb, Apr) but I guess I won't complain. They're not all in one week!

  4. I use Corel PaintShop Photo Pro, but I can totally relate to the fiddling around with something for far too long. I hope you're able to figure out Photoshop so it's less frustrating for you. I've been hearing a lot about SKY JUMPERS this week. I might have to check it out! Here's hoping your week is full of productive writing sessions and a good deal less cake. ;-)

  5. I'm also working on a second draft right now and LOVED that quote you posted. Here's killing your characters not yourself. I hope you have a great week.

  6. I'm starting notes for the second draft of my WIP, so I know how you feel! Good luck with it :)

  7. Lots of birthdays! I have also been sick of cake--sick of my favorite cake even, when we had leftover full round cakes from a family wedding. So much cake.

  8. Cake and tea... mmmmm, perfect combo. Send your extra cake my way! :D

That quote made me laugh because I have killed off numerous characters in second drafts. Thanks so much for sharing!

    Have a wonderful week :D

  9. SKY JUMPERS sounds great and I love the cover! I might have to add that one to the TBR list, especially since it's been a while since I indulged in some good MG stories.

Wow, sounds like cake has been a staple food at your house lately! Load up on veggies for a week and then you'll want the cake again lol.

Good luck on your second draft! :)

  10. I love the picture of you and Eliza! A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to three wonderful kids!!

Get to work on that MG novel because I want to read it! ;)

  11. Wow that's a lot of birthdays. It must cost a small fortune and with Christmas just around the corner too. You must be a super mum. ;)

  12. Happy Birthday to all three kids! Two of my brothers are two days apart, with one a week before them, so we have a setup a bit similar. Now that they're grown, we just all go out to dinner one night and celebrate their birthdays, Father's Day, and my parents' anniversary. June is crazy busy! I haven't shared The Trumpet of the Swan with my kids, but I remember a fondness for the book.

  13. Ohhh, Photoshop. I have such a love/hate relationship with it! I've used Photoshop tutorials on Lynda.com that were super helpful. Some of the tutorials are better than others, but for me - I'm a visual learner - the really good tutorials were priceless.

Best of luck with your second draft! :)

  14. Aw, those are 3 gorgeous kidlets! And how sweet you passed down your baptism gown. My 7 year old daughter just tried on my wedding dress the other day. So cute!
And wow to 3 bdays in one week!! Good luck with the photo shop. I need to teach myself that as well. Just what I need--one more thing to learn. lol

  15. I'm visiting :) and I remember reading with a flashlight!

  16. Three birthdays in one week?? That is crazy! Although, on the plus side, you get the rest of the year off, right? ;)

I've struggled with photoshop, too. It is so overwhelming! I learn one new thing, then use it for a few months and get totally comfortable with it, then learn something new, and integrate that. I can do about eight very cool things that make a big difference in what my photos look like, but I think I will never know all there is it can do. :(
