What Was Your Childhood Monster? Bloghop

During this month's IWSG I discovered Christine Rains and instantly wanted to be her best friend. I mean the subheading for her blog reads, My toddler has too much energy. So does my protagonist. I need more sleep.  I SO get that.
So I couldn't resist joining her bloghop this week in honor of her book Fearless coming out today.

My biggest childhood fear comes from a repeated dream. I'm kidnapped by this giant Big Bad Wolf. He throws me in a bag, dumps me in a boat on a lake, rows us across, makes a Robin sandwich (yup, that would be me between two enormous slices of white bread), and eats me. The moment his huge jaws lean in to take that first bite I always woke up.

A little too much of The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Gingerbread Boy at my house perhaps?

I really hope it's not the way I go, as some giant wolf's meal. After watching City of Ember this week with all their giant moths and that giant star mole (eww) I really hope it's not a possibility. Animals aren't getting bigger, are they???

At least I've never seen an oven large enough to make bread my size, though I did see boats made out of bread in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs...

Did you join the bloghop? What's your biggest childhood fear? Does it still haunt you?

And thanks to David P. King for his links to safe public domain pictures. I found this one on wikimedia (click picture for link)

  1. I had a recurring nightmare as a kid too. People from my church made these paper airplanes that would slice people's throats when thrown, including my own. I'll never forget those, yikes.

And I LOVE City of Ember. Tell me if you ever read the book too.

    Congrats to Christine!

    1. Wow-paper airplanes slicing throats. That's scary right now! And yes, City of Ember is now on my TBR. I'll let you know what I think.

  3. Hm, maybe mutated animals, but the wolf would have to be pretty civilized to want to eat you with bread! This story was a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing with us and for helping promote my novella. :)

  4. I'm sorry. But I laughed at the Robin Sandwich part. I'm sure it was terrifying as a kid, but it's funny now. I didn't participate in this bloghop, but most of my childhood mosters from my dreams were just bad people who wanted to hurt me. I probably couldn't identify them, it was just that feeling that you knew what would happen if they caught you.

  5. Ahhh, poor little kid Robin turning into a sandwich. I think I've repressed most of my memories like that, but I do remember being terrified of what lurked in the dark.

  6. :-) I love the Robin sandwich! I had a terrible dream as a child of two bald alien girls who lived under my bed and yanked me by the legs down there with them. For years, I had to turn off the lights at bedtime, then leap across the room to my bed so the bald alien girls wouldn't nab me.

  9. I'm afraid of the Big Bad Wolf. Most fairy tales are very frightening, in their essence. The big bad wolf, yep, still scary!

  10. Yeah, I think the Big Bad Wolf is one of those childhood monsters designed to terrify small children the world over. I'm still a little wary of that one :)

  11. We have similar scary moments to remember. Maybe you are right in that we read too many scary books as kids.

  13. A Robin sandwich- I LOVE that phrase, and your shortened version of the Three Little Pigs. Very funny! Movies are wheat freak my kids out- we've had to become QUITE selective. Great to meet you in the Blog hop!

  14. Haha--love the story, Robin! Interesting that you dreamed this but didn't fear a Big Bad Wolf in your closet or under your bed. Good timing for waking up, too :) Thanks for sharing!

  15. That's precisely what the Big Bad Wolf was for, right? To frighten legions of children to behave? Scary!
